It is narrated from Ibn ‘Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him:

On the night of Muzdalifah, I was among those who were sent ahead of the Prophet’s sallallahu alayhi wa sallam family – the weak ones.

From Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him):

The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings upon him) sent us, the children of Abdul Muttalib’s sons, on camels to Mina beforehand during the night of Muzdalifah. He stroked our thighs and said, “O my young ones, do not throw stones until the sun rises.”

Abu Dawud said: "Lath" means striking without causing pain. [16]

It is narrated from Ibn ‘Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings upon him) would send out the weak among his people during the darkness of the night, and command them – meaning he would order them not to throw stones until sunrise.

Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) related:

The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings upon him) commanded Umm Salama to throw the pebbles of Jamarat before dawn on the night of Eid al-Adha. Then Umm Salama descended [to Mina], and it was a day that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings upon him) was with Umm Salama. [18]

**Explanation:**

The Shafi’i school uses the hadith of Umm Salama to derive the permissibility of throwing pebbles at Jamrat al-Aqaba after midnight but before dawn on the first day of Eid. Ahmad ibn Hanbal says that the hadith of Umm Salama is anomalous (munakır). The Maliki school holds that no one is permitted to throw stones towards the direction of the Prophet before sunrise on the day of Eid. It is unanimously accepted, as reported in the narration of Jabir, that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings upon him) threw pebbles at Jamrat al-Aqaba after sunrise.

A person reported to Esma, may Allah be pleased with her.

I said to Esma, "We used to throw stones at your garments at night."

Esma said, “We too did that in the Era of Prosperity.” [19]

**EXPLANATION**

According to Imam al-Azam and Malik, this honorable hadith indicates permissibility for the weak to be sent from Muzdalifa to Mina after midnight, but it does not indicate permissibility for stoning before dawn. These two Imams are convinced that stoning before dawn is not permissible.

Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated:

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ descended from Muzdalifah slowly, commanded his companions to throw pebbles like chickpeas, and quickened the pace of his camel in the valley of Mihassar.
