JIHAD SECTION · 144 – Regarding the Release of One Who Steals from Booty if the Stolen Amount is Small
Abdullah ibn Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated:
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings upon him) would, when booty was obtained, order Bilal. Bilal then would call out, and the people would bring their shares of the booty. One-fifth would be set aside. The remainder would be distributed. A man brought a halter woven from hair and said, “O Messenger of Allah, this is from that which we have gained as booty.” The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings upon him) then said to him three times, "Did you hear Bilal's call?" He said, "Yes." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings upon him) said, "What prevented you from bringing it at the appointed time?” The man apologized to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings upon him). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings upon him) said, “I will not accept it from you. You bring it on the Day of Resurrection.”
