SACRIFICIAL SECTION · 13 – Is the slaughtered animal of People of the Book permissible to eat?
According to a narration from Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, the following was revealed: “Eat of that which has been slaughtered upon mentioning [Allah’s] Name,” and “Do not eat of that which has not had [Allah's] Name mentioned upon it.” (This relates to verses 118 and 121 of Surah al-An’am). Except for what is permitted from the food of the People of the Book, as stated in verse five of Surah al-Maidah: “The food of the People of the Book is permissible to you, and your food is permissible to them.”
According to the report of Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him):
The devils whisper to their disbelieving companions, and they say, “Eat what Allah has killed.” They say, "Eat what you slaughter yourselves." Thereupon the Most High and Majestic Allah revealed the verse: “And do not eat of that over which [the name of] Allah has not been mentioned,” (Surah Al-An’am, 121). [546]
It is narrated from Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, that he said:
The Jews came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and said, “Are we to eat of what we slaughter, but not of what Allah slaughters?” Thereupon the Most High, the Glorious God, revealed the verse 121 of Surah Al-An’am, which means: "Do not consume of that over which the name of Allah has not been mentioned.” [547]
