Volume 4 – 26 – News Regarding the Conquest of Taif
Vehb (may Allah be pleased with him) relates: I asked Jabir about the condition of the Banu Sakif when they pledged allegiance. Jabir said:
The Banu Sakif stipulated to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, that they would not pay zakat and would not participate in war. Afterward, Jabir heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say: “When they become Muslims, they will give zakat and engage in jihad.”
COMMENTARY
Taif was besieged for twenty days and then abandoned. Then a delegation came [seeking acceptance] and stipulated conditions for their pledge, namely that they would not pay zakat and would not participate in war. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, accepted their pledge hoping that when Islam settled in their hearts, they would fulfill these obligations.
Osman ibn Abi al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) related:
When the Saqif delegation came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he brought them down into the Masjid [mosque] so that their hearts might be more attentive. They stipulated that they not be obligated with jihad, tithes, or prayer until they could accept Islam. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Let no soldiers be taken from among you, and let no tithe be collected from you, but there is no good in a religion which lacks bowing.”
