It is narrated from Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him):

Fadl bin Abbas was in the retinue of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings upon him). A woman from the tribe of Hasam had come to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings upon him) seeking a legal opinion. Fadl (may Allah be pleased with him) looked at the woman, and the woman looked at Fadl (may Allah be pleased with her). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings upon him) began to turn Fadl’s face away. The woman said: “O Messenger of Allah! Hajj is a commandment that Allah has made obligatory for His servants. My father is an old man whose age has reached its peak, and he cannot even stand on his camel. Can I perform the pilgrimage on his behalf?” The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings upon him) replied: "Yes, you may." This occurred during the Farewell Pilgrimage. [568]

Hafs ibn Umar said: A man from the children of Amir came to the Messenger of Allah and said, "My father is an old man who cannot endure pilgrimage, `umrah, or travel." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Perform pilgrimage and `umrah on behalf of your father.”

COMMENTARY: Imam Ahmad said, “I do not know a more sound or firmer hadith regarding the obligation of `umrah than this one.”

It is narrated from Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) that:

The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings upon him) heard a man saying “Labbaik” on behalf of Shubruma. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings upon him) said to him, "Who is Shubruma?" He said, "He is my brother or my relative."

The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings upon him) said: “Did you perform Hajj on your own behalf?” The man replied, “I did not.” The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings upon him) then said to him, “Perform Hajj on your own behalf, then perform Hajj on behalf of Shubruma.” [569]

COMMENTARY:

Bayhaqi says that the chain of narration of this hadith is sound, and there is no more authentic hadith in this subject.
