RITES OF HAJJ SECTION · 54 – THE TAWAF OF ONE PERFORMING HAJJ AL-QIRĀN
1895 – It is narrated from Jābir ibn ʿAbdullāh (may Allah be pleased with him): The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) and his Companions (ṣaḥāba) did not perform any saʿy between Ṣafā and Marwa except for the first saʿy they performed. [621]
EXPLANATION
Hajj al-qirān (combining ʿumra and ḥajj in one ihrām) and hajj al-tamattuʿ (performing ʿumra, exiting ihrām, then entering ihrām again for ḥajj) have been accepted by three madhhabs (schools of law). There is disagreement regarding the number of tawaf (circumambulations). According to ʿAlī, Ibn Masʿūd, Sufyān al-Thawrī, Abū Ḥanīfa, the scholars of Kūfa, al-Awzāʿī, and in one narration from Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal, it is obligatory for one performing qirān or tamattuʿ to perform two saʿys and two tawafs. The first tawaf is for ʿumra, and the second tawaf is the obligatory tawaf performed on the first, second, or third day of the festival (ʿĪd). The first saʿy is the saʿy of ʿumra, and the second is the saʿy of ḥajj. Scholars also say that for those performing ʿumra, hajj al-qirān, and tamattuʿ, only one tawaf is required. They cite this hadith as evidence. The third madhhab: For one performing hajj al-tamattuʿ, two tawafs and two saʿys are required; for one performing qirān, only one saʿy is required. This is the view of the Shāfiʿī and Mālikī schools, as well as ʿAṭāʾ, Ṭāwūs, and Ḥasan al-Baṣrī. As evidence, they cite the hadith of ʿĀʾisha mentioned under number (1781).
1896 – It is narrated from ʿĀʾisha (may Allah be pleased with her): The Companions (ṣaḥāba) who were with the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) did not circumambulate the Kaʿba until they had stoned the jamarāt (stone pillars).
1897 – It is narrated from ʿĀʾisha (may Allah be pleased with her): The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) said to her: “Your single circumambulation of the Kaʿba and your single saʿy between Ṣafā and Marwa suffice for both your hajj and your ʿumra.” [622]
