CHAPTER ON FASTING · 29 – Permission Regarding Giving Blood to a Person Who is Fasting
It is narrated from Ibn ‘Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him:
The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, had bloodletting performed while he was fasting.
It is narrated from Ibn ‘Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him:
The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, had blood drawn while he was fasting and in the state of ihram.
‘Abdurrahman bin Abi Layla related: A man from the companions of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, reported to me that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, forbade phlebotomy (drawing blood) while fasting and consecutive fasts without breaking them. However, he did not make them permanently forbidden. It was said, “O Messenger of Allah, you remain without breaking your fast until the early morning.” The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, "I do not break my fast until the early morning, for my Lord feeds me and gives me drink."
Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: “We refrain from drawing blood from a fasting person so that he does not experience hardship.”
