SECTION ON JIHAD · 171 – PERMISSION TO RETURN TO A PROHIBITED ACT AFTER A PROHIBITION

2771 – It is narrated from Ibn ʿAbbās (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: The verse from Sūrat al-Tawba, “Those who believe in Allah and the Last Day do not ask your leave to be exempt from striving with their wealth and their lives,” (Qur’an 9:44) abrogated the sixty-second verse of Sūrat al-Nūr, which is: “The believers are only those who believe in Allah and His Messenger and, when they are with him on a collective matter, do not leave until they have asked his permission. Indeed, Allah is ever Forgiving and Merciful.” (Qur’an 24:62), up to the words: “Indeed, Allah is ever Forgiving and Merciful.”
