RITES OF HAJJ SECTION · 24 – QIRĀN HAJJ

1795 – It is narrated from Anas ibn Mālik as follows:
– I heard the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: “Labbayk for ʿumra and hajj! Labbayk for ʿumra and hajj!”
[557]

1796 – It is narrated from Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) as follows:
The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) stayed there, that is, at Dhū’l-Ḥulayfa, until morning. Then he mounted (his camel). When his camel ascended the hill of Bayḍāʾ, he praised Allah, glorified Him, and proclaimed His greatness. Then he made intention for both hajj and ʿumra together and recited the talbiya. The people also entered into ihram and recited the talbiya for both hajj and ʿumra together. When we arrived in Mecca, he commanded the people to exit ihram, and they did so. On the day of tarwiya (the day before ʿArafa), they entered ihram and recited the talbiya only for hajj. On the day of Eid, the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) personally sacrificed seven camels while standing.
Abū Dāwūd said: The part of this hadith that Anas narrated alone is: “He (the Prophet) first said al-ḥamdu lillāh, subḥānallāh, Allāhu akbar, then entered ihram for hajj.” [558]

1797 – It is narrated from Barāʾ ibn ʿĀzib (may Allah be pleased with him) as follows:
When the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) appointed ʿAlī (may Allah be pleased with him) as governor of Yemen, I was with ʿAlī. I obtained a large amount (of gold) with him. When ʿAlī (may Allah be pleased with him) came from Yemen to the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him), he said: “I found Fāṭima wearing a dyed garment, and the house was perfumed.” Fāṭima (may Allah be pleased with her) said to ʿAlī: Why do you not exit ihram, while the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded his Companions (ṣaḥāba) to exit ihram, and they did so? ʿAlī (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I replied to her: I entered ihram with the same intention as the Prophet. “He has not yet exited ihram,” I answered. I went to the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him). The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) asked me: How did you act when entering ihram? I said: I intended to enter ihram as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did.
The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I have driven sacrificial animals and made intention for qirān hajj. The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: “Slaughter sixty-seven or sixty-six of the sacrificial camels, take thirty-three or thirty-four for yourself, and set aside a portion from each camel you slaughter for me.”
EXPLANATION
This hadith clearly indicates that the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) performed qirān hajj. There is a long explanation on this subject in the commentary of Khaṭṭābī. Also, it indicates that it is permissible for those performing qirān hajj to eat from the meat of the sacrificial animals they slaughter.

1798 – It is narrated from Abū Wāʾil (may Allah be pleased with him) as follows:
Subay ibn Maʿbad (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I made intention for both hajj and ʿumra together and recited the talbiya. ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with him) said to me: “You have followed the sunnah of your Prophet.” [559]

1799 – It is narrated from Abū Wāʾil (may Allah be pleased with him) as follows:
Subay ibn Maʿbad (may Allah be pleased with him) relates: I was a Christian Bedouin man; I became Muslim. I went to a man from my tribe named Huzaym ibn Surmula and said to him: “O you, look at me! I am very eager to fight, and hajj and ʿumra have become obligatory for me. How can I perform both together?” Huzaym said:
Combine both and sacrifice whatever animal is easy for you. So I made the talbiya for both together. When I reached Uzayb, Zayd ibn Sūḥān and Salmān ibn Rabīʿa met me. At that time, I was reciting the talbiya for both hajj and ʿumra together. One of them said to the other: This man is no different from his camel in knowledge. It was as if a mountain had collapsed upon me.
I immediately went to ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb and said to him: O Commander of the Believers! I was a Christian Bedouin man. I became Muslim, I am eager to fight, and hajj and ʿumra have become obligatory for me. I went to a man from my tribe (Huzaym), and he told me to combine hajj and ʿumra and sacrifice whatever animal I could afford. So I made the talbiya for both with that intention. ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb (may Allah be pleased with him) said:
“You have followed the sunnah of your Prophet.”
EXPLANATION
This noble hadith is an explicit proof that qirān hajj is permissible and is a sunnah. Henāh: means "I say to you, turn to me" (Qāmūs Translation).

1800 – ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb said that he heard the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) say:
“Tonight, a messenger from my Mighty and Majestic Lord came to me.” ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with him) says:
The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) was then at al-ʿAqīq. The messenger said to him:
Pray in this blessed valley and say: ‘I have made intention for ʿumra within hajj.’”
Abū Dāwūd says: ʿAlī ibn Mubārak narrated from Yaḥyā ibn Abī Kathīr in this hadith: “and for ʿumra within hajj.” [560]
EXPLANATION
In one narration of this hadith in Bukhārī, the conjunction “wa” is used instead of “fī.” If it is “wa,” it means: I made intention for both hajj and ʿumra together. Al-ʿAqīq: is the name of a valley.

1801 – It is narrated from Rabīʿ ibn Sabra, who narrated from his father (may Allah be pleased with him), as follows:
We set out with the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him). When we reached Usfān, Surāqa ibn Mālik al-Mudlijī said to him:
O Messenger of Allah, explain to us (about hajj) as if you are explaining to people newly born. The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
“Indeed, Allah has included ʿumra in your hajj. When you arrive in Mecca, whoever circumambulates the Kaʿba and performs saʿy between Ṣafā and Marwa, exits ihram, except for those who have brought sacrificial animals with them.”
EXPLANATION
Usfān: is the name of a location.
The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) explained to the Mudlij tribe the hajj al-tamattuʿ, that one can exit ihram after performing ʿumra first, and then perform hajj. Those performing hajj al-tamattuʿ may exit ihram after ʿumra. However, if they have brought their sacrificial animals with them, they cannot exit ihram until they have slaughtered them.

1802 – It is narrated from Muʿāwiya ibn Abī Sufyān (may Allah be pleased with him) as follows:
I cut and shortened the hair of the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) at Marwa with scissors, or I saw the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) having his hair cut and shortened. [561]

1803 – It is narrated from Ibn ʿAbbās (may Allah be pleased with him) that Muʿāwiya said to him:
“Do you not know that I shortened some of the Messenger of God’s hair at Marwa with an Arab pair of scissors?”
The transmitter al-Ḥasan added to his narration the phrase: “for exiting from the ihram of hajj (intention).” [562]

1804 – It is narrated from Ibn ʿAbbās (may Allah be pleased with him) as follows:
The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) made intention for ʿumra, and his Companions (ṣaḥāba) made intention for hajj and recited the talbiya. [563]

1805 – It is narrated from ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with him) as follows:
The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) performed tamattuʿ with ʿumra until hajj in the Farewell Hajj and sacrificed an animal. He had brought the sacrificial animal (hady) with him from Dhū’l-Ḥulayfa. The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) began by entering ihram for ʿumra, then entered ihram for hajj. The people performed tamattuʿ with ʿumra until the day of hajj together with the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him). Some of the people had brought sacrificial animals, and some had not. When the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) arrived in Mecca, he said to the people:
“Whoever among you has sent a sacrificial animal, nothing forbidden in ihram becomes lawful for him until he completes his hajj. Whoever among you has not sent a sacrificial animal, let him circumambulate the Kaʿba, perform saʿy between Ṣafā and Marwa, shorten his hair, exit ihram, then (on the eighth of Dhū’l-Ḥijja) enter ihram for hajj, send his sacrificial animal, and whoever cannot find a sacrificial animal (who cannot afford a sacrifice), let him fast three days during the hajj and seven days when he returns to his family.”
When the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) arrived in Mecca, the first thing he did was to touch the Black Stone corner, then in the first three circuits of the circumambulation, he walked briskly with short steps, and in the remaining four circuits, he walked normally. After circumambulating the Kaʿba, he prayed two rakʿas at the Station of Abraham, then gave salām and went to Ṣafā. He performed saʿy between Ṣafā and Marwa (going four times and returning three times, making seven circuits). Then he did not do anything forbidden to one in ihram until the day of Eid, after he had slaughtered his sacrificial animal and completed all the rites of hajj.
He stayed in Mecca and performed the obligatory circumambulation of the Kaʿba. After that, what was forbidden to one in ihram became lawful.
Those among the people who had sent sacrificial animals and those who had not did as the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) did. [564]
EXPLANATION
Habba: means "he ran."

1806 – It is narrated from Ḥafṣa (may Allah be pleased with her), the wife of the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him), as follows:
She said to the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him):
O Messenger of Allah, what is the matter with the people that they have exited their ihram, while you have not exited your ihram from your ʿumra? The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
“I have matted my hair and marked my sacrificial animal. I will not exit my ihram until I have slaughtered my sacrificial animal.” [565]
EXPLANATION
Talbīd: is to matt the hair with a sticky substance, so that dust and dirt do not enter and the hair does not fall out; this was their practice. Those performing hajj al-tamattuʿ, if their sacrificial animals are with them, do not exit ihram until they have slaughtered them.
