CHAPTER 7 – Void Oaths
It is related from Ata concerning oaths of frivolity. Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings upon him) said: "The oath of frivolity is merely saying, 'By Allah,' and 'Yes, by Allah.'"
Abu Dawud said: Among the narrators is Ibrahim al-Saiiq, who was a righteous man. Abu Muslim Arandes killed him. If he heard the adhan when he raised his hammer, he would let it go.
EXPLANATION
Oath of Frivolity: It is an oath that a person makes unintentionally in their speech, such as saying "By Allah" or "By God." No expiation is required for an oath of frivolity, or if someone does not see a container filled with water and then says, “By Allah, this vessel is full of water,” because he did not see it empty, so this is considered a frivolous oath, and no expiation is required from its owner.
