SECTION ON JIHAD · 182 – RESIDING IN THE LAND OF SHIRK
2787 – It is narrated from Samura ibn Jundub (may Allah be pleased with him):
Thereafter, the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever
associates with a mushrik (polytheist) and resides with him (in the land of the mushrik), he
is like the mushrik."
EXPLANATION
There are several meanings to being with a mushrik:
1. To befriend a mushrik, to sit and rise with him.
2. To marry a mushrik woman and remain together with her.
3. If both husband and wife are mushrik, and the man becomes Muslim while the woman persists in her shirk (associating partners with God),
and the man does not separate from her but remains close to her and stays together with her, then he is like her. It is not possible for a mushrik woman to live together with a believing man. For a disbeliever cannot be under the marriage contract of the people of iman (faith). Likewise, a believing woman cannot remain in the marriage of a mushrik man. It is not permissible for a believing woman to be under the marriage contract of a disbeliever.
