SECTION ON ZAKAT · 32 – RIGHTS IN PROPERTY
From Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him):
We used to count as mā’ūn the lending of buckets and pots among neighbors in the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings upon him).
EXPLANATION:
Mā’ūn refers to items such as axes, knives, awls, needles, and pots, which were customarily entrusted according to established practice.
Abū Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated:
The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings upon him, said: "Any wealthy person who does not pay the zakah of his wealth, Allah will heat that wealth in the Fire of Hell and scorch it. He will have his forehead and sides of his face branded with that heated property for a day which seems like fifty thousand years until Allah judges between His servants. Then he will be shown the way either to Paradise or to Hell. Any sheep owner who does not pay the zakah of his sheep, (in the Hereafter they will harass their owner on a level and expansive plain more than they did in this world with their horns, and trample him with their hooves; there will be neither hornless nor spiraled-horn rams). When the flock passes by, it will return to trample upon its owner. This torment will continue for a time equivalent to fifty thousand of your days until Allah judges between His servants. Then he will be shown the way either to Paradise or to Hell. Any camel owner who does not pay the zakah of his camels, they will trample him with their hooves more intensely and forcefully than they did in this world. When the camels pass by, they will turn around and trample upon their owners. This torment will continue for a time equivalent to fifty thousand of your days until Allah judges between His servants. Then he will be shown the way either to Paradise or to Hell."
Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, relates a hadith similar to this one. When the narration reached the phrase "(If he does not fulfill its rights)," he added, "(One of the rights of the camel) is that they are milked when they arrive at the watering place."
From Abu Hurayra, may Allah be pleased with him:
I heard the same narrative from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. To Abu Hurayra it was said:
“What is the right of the female camel?”
Abu Hurayra said: “You entrust them [the camels] for milking those that are good and have abundant milk, so that benefit may be derived from their milk. You entrust them for riding. You entrust the male camel to inseminate the females. And you give of their milk to the poor.”
From Ubayd ibn Umayr, may Allah be pleased with him:
A man asked the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, "O Messenger of Allah, what is the right of the camel?" The narrator mentioned something similar to hadith number 1659 and added the words, “You give the camels their water skins as ariyat.”
Jabir ibn Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated:
The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Whenever ten *wasāq* of dates are harvested from the date palms, a cluster of dates must be hung in the mosque for the poor to eat.”
EXPLANATION:
*Kinnv:* This refers to a cluster of dates.
*Jadd:* This means harvesting dates from the tree, cutting them, and gathering the produce.
One *wasāq* is sixty *sa’*, so ten *wasāq* are 600 *sa’*.
From Abu Sa’id al-Hudri, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated: We were once on an expedition with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, when a man arrived riding a camel, turning it from side to side. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “Let those who have extra mounts give them to those who do not, and let those who have extra provisions give them to those who do not.” Until we thought that none of us had any right in what was exceeding of our possessions.
From Ibn 'Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him:
When the verse regarding "those who hoard gold and silver" (Surah At-Tawbah 34) was revealed, it weighed heavily upon the Muslims. Then 'Umar ibn al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, said, “I bring you news that alleviates this,” and they went [to the Prophet]. He said to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, "O Messenger of Allah, this noble verse has weighed heavily upon your companions." The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
“Indeed, Allah only made obligatory zakah to purify what remains of your wealth, and He made obligatory inheritances for those who will come after you.”
'Umar then pronounced "Allahu Akbar" [God is Greater]. Then the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “O 'Umar, should I tell you what is the most precious treasure a person can possess? – A righteous woman who pleases her husband when he looks at her, obeys him when he commands her, and protects his secrets and his home even when he is not present. Indeed, this is the most precious treasure.”
