SHOPPING SECTION · 17 – SELLING ANIMAL FOR ANIMAL AND SLAVE FOR SLAVE (as a lump sum)
Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated:
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings upon him) purchased two slaves for the price of one slave.
Zayd ibn Abi Isha reported that Sa’d ibn Abi Waqqas (Allah be pleased with him) asked him whether fresh white wheat could be sold for the price of dry wheat. Sa'd (Allah be pleased with him) then asked him which of these wheats was superior. Zayd said, “The fresh white wheat is superior.” Upon this, Sa’d forbade him from buying or selling fresh or white wheat for the price of dry wheat. He further stated: "I asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) about purchasing fresh dates with dried dates. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, ‘Do they diminish when fresh dates become dry?’ They replied, ‘Yes.’ The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade anyone who asked the question from buying or selling fresh dates for dried dates."
Sa’d ibn Abi Waqqas, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated:
The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, forbade selling deferred (barter) goods of fresh dates for dry dates.
COMMENTARY:
If dried grapes are sold in exchange for fresh grapes, it is not permissible because a kilogram of fresh grapes does not yield a kilogram of dried grapes when they dry. Especially, it is not permissible to sell fresh fruit on deferred terms for dried fruit.
