SECTION ON JIHAD · 179 – THE FEE FOR THE DIVISION OF SHARES

2783 – It is narrated from Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī (may Allah be pleased with him): The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Beware of kusāma!” We asked, “What is kusāma?” The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “It is when something is shared among some people, and someone comes (to divide it among them), and (by setting aside a portion for himself) he diminishes it. (That is what kusāma is),” he said.

2784 – ʿAtāʾ ibn Yasār also narrated (in mursal form) a similar hadith from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). ʿAtāʾ said: “A person is appointed (as an expert) over a group of people. He takes from the right of this one and from the right of that one (and this is what is forbidden in the hadith).”
