Seleme ibn ‘Aqwa, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated:

On the day of Khaybar, my brother became embroiled in fierce fighting. They began to speak about him, and they doubted his condition, suspecting that he had been killed by his own weapon. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “He died as a mujahid striving in obedience to Allah.”

Ibn Shihab said: I asked Seleme ibn ‘Aqwa’s son, and he narrated something similar from his father, except that he said the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “They lied; he died as a mujahid striving in obedience to Allah. His reward is doubled.” [375]

COMMENTARY

*Jahidun*, *mujahidun*: Both words are active participles. The first (*jahidun*) means one who is devoted and obedient, while the second means one who strives through warfare. It is permissible for the second word to reinforce the first. (Avnu’l-Ma’bud)

From Abu Salam, who reported from one of the companions of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, that he said:

We attacked a tribe of the Banu Juhayna. A Muslim man among us requested to fight one of them. He swung his sword, but the sword missed its target and killed him. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “O community of Muslims, attend to your brother!” They rushed towards him, finding him dead. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, wrapped him in his bloodstained garment, performed the funeral prayer for him, and buried him. The companions said: "Is he a martyr, O Messenger of Allah?" The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, replied, “Yes, I am also a witness to that.”
