It is narrated from Abdullah ibn Mas’ud regarding the sermon of need and other matters. Abdullah ibn Mas’ud, may Allah be pleased with him, related that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, taught us the sermon of need in this manner: “Indeed, all praise belongs to Allah. We ask for His help and seek forgiveness from Him. We take refuge in Him from the evil of our own selves. No one can misguide those whom Allah has guided, and no one can guide those whom Allah has misguided. I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, is His servant and Messenger. O believers! Fear Allah by whom you call each other’s names, and surely Allah is watchful over you regarding the ties of kinship.” A narrator, Muhammad ibn Sulayman, omitted the word “indeed.”

It is narrated from Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings upon him) would, while reciting the declarations of faith, do as previously described. And he said, “Regarding the words ‘His Messenger,’ [it is] Allah who has sent His Messenger close to the Day of Resurrection as a herald of good news and a warner. Whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger, then he finds guidance. But whoever disobeys Allah and His Messenger, then he only harms himself. He cannot inflict any harm upon Allah.”

Ismail ibn Ibrahim has narrated to me from a man of Banu Suleym that he said:

I asked for Umama, daughter of Abdulmuttalib, from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. Thereupon, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, married her to me without delivering a sermon (khutba – declaration of testimony).

EXPLANATION

Munziri says: The isnad of this hadith contains Imran ibn Dawud al-Kattan. There is gossip about him. Umama, may Allah be pleased with her, is the daughter of Haris, son of Abdulmuttalib, and the daughter of Rabia. She is called the daughter of Abdulmuttalib by attribution to her grandfather.
