SECTION 58 – The Standing at Arafat
Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) related:
The people of Quraysh and those who followed their religion would stand at Muzdalifah, and they were called “al-Hums.” The other Arabs would stand at Arafat. Then when Islam came, Allah ordered the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings upon him) to come to Arafat, perform the standing there, and then descend from Arafat. This is the command of Allah’s statement: "Then leave as others have left." [629]
**EXPLANATION:**
Al-Hums: The plural form of Ahmas. Ahmas: It denotes bravery. This was a title given to Quraysh, Kinanah, and those who followed them during the pre-Islamic era (Jahiliyyah). Innovations existed such as the people of Quraysh performing tawaf wearing specific clothing, standing at Muzdalifah instead of ascending to Arafat, and those who stood at Arafat returning by a different route than the one they descended. Islam eliminated these innovations.
