MARRIAGE SECTION · 14 – MUT'A MARRIAGE
According to a narration from Zuhri (may Allah be pleased with him), he said:
We were in the presence of Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz, and we discussed *mut’ah* (temporary marriage). A man named Rabi' ibn Sabra said: “I witnessed my father say that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade it during the Farewell Pilgrimage.” [98]
**Note:** *Mut’ah* was permissible in the early days of Islam. This concession was revoked during the Farewell Pilgrimage, and *mut’ah* became forbidden. There is consensus among jurists regarding the sanctity of *mut’ah*.
Except for the Shi'ites, *mut’ah* is marriage for a specified period against a defined sum (of money). *Muwakkat* marriage includes *mut’ah*, but in *muwakkat* marriage, the matter of wealth is not as prominent, and it is a short-term marriage intended to satisfy desires.
Rabi ibn Sabir, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated from his father:
Indeed, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, forbade marriage through *mut’a*.
