2174 – From Abū Nadra: An elder from Tufāwa told me the following:
I was a guest of Abū Hurayra in Medina. Among the Companions (ṣaḥāba) of the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him), I saw no one more devoted to worship or more respectful to guests than him. One day, I was with him. He was on a couch of his own. With him was a pouch containing pebbles or date pits. Below him, there was a black slave girl belonging to him. Abū Hurayra would perform tasbīḥ (glorification of God) with the stones, and when the contents of the pouch were finished, he would throw the pouch to the slave girl, who would gather the stones and return them to the pouch, then hand it back to Abū Hurayra.
Abū Hurayra said, "Shall I tell you about myself and the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him)?" I said, "Yes."
Abū Hurayra said: Once, I was groaning in the mosque from the severity of fever. The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) came, even entering the mosque, and three times said, "Who has seen the young man from Daws (Abū Hurayra)?" Someone said, "O Messenger of God, he is there, in a corner of the mosque, stricken with severe fever." The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) turned and walked to me, until he reached me. He placed his hand upon me and spoke good words to me.
He got up and walked to the place in the mosque where he led the prayer. With him there were two rows of men and one row of women, or two rows of women and one row of men. He turned to them and said, "If Satan causes me to forget something in my prayer, let the men say 'subḥānallāh', and let the women clap their hands."
The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) led the prayer and did not forget anything in it. After the prayer, he said, "Remain in your places, remain in your places." (Among the narrators) Mūsā said, "here." Then we praised and extolled Allah. And then he said, "Let us come to the point." Then the narrators agreed on the following words in the narration. Then the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) turned to the men and said, "When one of you has intercourse with his wife, he closes his door, draws his cover over himself, and is thus covered with Allah's covering, is he not?" They said, "Yes."
The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Then after intercourse, he sits and says, 'I did such and such, I did such and such.'" The men remained silent. The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) turned to the women and said, "Is there any among you who tells other women what she does with her husband?" The women also fell silent. The narrator Muʿammal said in his narration:
Thereupon, a young girl knelt down, stretched her neck toward the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) so that she might hear his words well and be seen by him, and said:
"O Messenger of God, both men and women talk and tell (about such things)."
The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Do you know what this is like? The example of this is like a female devil who meets a male devil in the street, and while everyone is looking on, the male devil has intercourse with the female devil, fulfilling his desire. It is like that."
Take heed: The fragrance that men use should be of those whose scent is perceived but whose color is not seen, and the fragrance that women use should be of those whose color is seen but whose scent is not perceived.
Abū Dāwūd said: From here on, what I will relate I took from Muʿammal and Mūsā:
"Take heed: Let no man lie under a cover with another man, nor a woman with another woman, except with her child or her father." He mentioned three more things. I forgot them; they are found in the ḥadīth of Musaddad (but I could not establish them as firmly as I wished). Mūsā also mentioned the following in the chain of this ḥadīth. He said: Ḥammād informed us, from Jarīrī, from Abū Naẓir, from Tafāwī. [164]
