Mujammi ibn Jaridat al-Ansarī, who was among those who recited the Qur'an beautifully, related: “We were present with the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, at Hudaybiyyah. When we returned, people were racing their camels. Some of the people said to others, ‘What is happening to these people that they are racing their animals?’ They said, 'Revelation has come down to the Messenger of Allah.’ I went out with the people and spurred our mounts. We found the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, on his camel at a place called Qura al-Gamim. When the people gathered around him, he recited to them the verse: ‘Verily, We have given you a clear victory,’ A man said, ‘Is this a victory, O Messenger of Allah?’ The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said, ‘I swear by Him in whose hand is my soul, that is (the announcement of) victory.’ He distributed the spoils of Khaybar to those who were at Hudaybiyyah. The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, divided it into eighteen shares. The army was fifteen hundred strong. There were three hundred cavalrymen. He gave two shares to the cavalry and one share to the foot soldiers. Abu Dawud said: Abu Muawiyah’s hadith is more authentic; practice is based on it. I see an error in Mujammi's hadith, for he stated that there were three hundred horsemen, while there were only two hundred.’”
