FASTING SECTION · 71 – ON THE INTENTION IN FASTING
The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, narrated on the authority of his wife Hafsa, may Allah be pleased with her, that he said:
“One who does not make an intention to fast before dawn has no fast.” [335]
EXPLANATION
Intention is permissible for the Fasting of Ramadan and voluntary prayers until the evening, at the pre-dawn meal, and during the time of kuşluk (mid-morning). This is the school of thought of Imam al-A’zam. For expiation fasts, vows, and missed fasts, intention must be made between the evening and dawn. According to Shafi'i and Ahmad ibn Hanbal, an intention can be made at dawn for the Fasting of Ramadan. An intention made after dawn is not valid. (Mealim al-Sunan, vol. 3, p. 333)
