According to the report of Abu Usayd, may Allah be pleased with him, he said: When we lined up for the battle of Badr, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “When the enemy approaches you, and surrounds you, shoot at them with arrows. Once they are beyond the range of your arrows, then retain (your arrows).”
