RITES OF HAJJ SECTION · 37 – THE MUḤRIM APPLYING KOHL
1838 – It is narrated from Nubayh ibn Wahb (may Allah be pleased with him): ʿUmar ibn ʿUbaydullah ibn Maʿmar (may Allah be pleased with him) was complaining of pain in his eyes. He informed Abān ibn ʿUthmān of his condition and asked what he could do for his aching eyes. Sufyān, one of the narrators, says: At that time, Abān was the amir of the Hajj. Abān said: "Apply sabr (the juice of a certain tree), for I heard ʿUthmān (may Allah be pleased with him) narrate this from the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him)." [585]
EXPLANATION
Sabr (the juice of a certain tree) is made from the sap of trees. Since it is not considered a type of fragrance, it has been permitted to bind the eye with a cloth for trachoma and other eye pains. If kohl is not mixed with any fragrance, there is no objection to applying it to the eyes while in the state of iḥrām. In this matter, Imām Aʿzam (Abū Ḥanīfa) and his students, Sufyān al-Thawrī, Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal, and Isḥāq also granted permission. (Maʿālim al-Sunan, vol. 2, p. 256)
1839 – From Nāfiʿ, the previously mentioned hadith from Nubayh ibn Wahb was narrated.
