Amr bin Shu'ayb narrated from his grandfather through his father, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “The lives (and worth) of Muslims are equal to one another. Even the least among them strives for the safety of their brothers’ rights. Those who are furthest away give security on their behalf. They are a single entity against those outside them. The strong amongst them provide for the weak from the spoils of war. Those who go out on expeditions provide for those who remain behind. A believer is not killed in return for another believer, and one who has made an agreement (treaty) is killed within its terms.”

Ibn Ishaq omitted the mention of retaliation [500]

EXPLANATION:

The lives of Muslims are equal. In retribution or compensation, the wealthy cannot be superior to the poor. Even those in the lowest status strive for the safety of others through their security (eman). Even a single disbeliever strives for the security of the believers in their land. Or, the women, slaves, and other weakest members of the believers possess the ability to give security just as all believers do.

For example: If a woman gives security to a polytheist, all believers respect that woman’s security and allow the polytheist to strive (safely). Those who are furthest away provide security for them. Even if some of the believers' homes are far away, when they make an agreement with a disbeliever, no one has the right to violate it. They help each other. They are united against the enemy.

Iyas’s father, Salama bin Akwa, has narrated:

Abdurrahman bin Uwayna raided the Prophet (ﷺ)’s camels, killed the shepherd, and with his mounted companions drove off the camels. Consequently, I turned towards Medina. Then I shouted thrice, "Pursue them!" Afterwards, I followed that group. I would shoot arrows and wound them. When a rider turned towards me, I would sit at the root of a tree (and hide, shooting arrows at them). By Allah (c.c), I left behind every riding beast that Allah had created for the Prophet (ﷺ) to save them.

The enemy discarded more than thirty arrows and more than thirty cloaks to lighten their load. Then Uwayna came to their aid. And he said to them, "Let one of you rise up to him." Four men rose up to seize me. They ascended the mountain.

When I approached close enough for them to hear me, I said, “Do you know who I am?” They said, “Who are you?”

I said, “I am the son of Akwa.” I swear by Allah, Who has glorified Muhammad’s countenance, that if anyone wants to seize me, he will not be able to catch me, and if I want to seize someone, he will not escape from me."

I did not move from my place. Then I looked and saw the Prophet (ﷺ)’s cavalry entering amongst the trees. At the forefront was Ahram al-Asadi. He caught up with Abdurrahman bin Uwayna. Abdurrahman responded to him. They exchanged two spear thrusts each. Ahram wounded Abdurrahman’s mount. Abdurrahman then speared and killed Ahram. Abdurrahman mounted Ahram's horse. Meanwhile, Abu Katada caught up with Abdurrahman, and they exchanged two spear thrusts each. He killed Abu Katada’s mount. Abu Katada then killed Abdurrahman. Abu Katada mounted Ahram’s horse, and afterwards I came to the Prophet (ﷺ) at the head of the Kared watercourse to inform him that we had driven them off. And behold, the Prophet (ﷺ) was amongst five hundred men. He gave me both a cavalry and an infantry share on that day. [501]

EXPLANATION:

*Bürde:* It is a small black carpet with four corners. Bedouins wear it like a cloak on their backs.

*Yâsabahah:* This is a term used in times of enemy raids for seeking aid.
