THE CHAPTER OF CORPSES · 58 – THE TAKBIR TO BE RECITED WHEN PREPARING FOR JANAZAH PRAYER (Funeral Prayer)

Sha'bi, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came across a newly dug grave whose earth was still moist. He stood in line beside it and took four takbirs over it.
I asked Abu Ishaq: Who informed you about this, Sha’bi? Sha’bi said: “A trustworthy person who was present there at that time, Abdullah bin Abbas.”

It is narrated from the son of Ibn Abi Layla that he said:
Zayd ibn Arqam would take four takbirs when leading prayers over our deceased.
He took five takbirs over one deceased. When I asked him why he took five takbirs,
the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “That is how he used to do.” [108]
