FASTING CHAPTER · 36 – The situation of someone who wakes up in a state of ritual impurity during the month of Ramadan
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), both Aisha and Umm Salama (may Allah be pleased with them) stated:
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would sometimes wake up in a state of ritual impurity. In the narration of Abdullah al-Azraqi, it is said, "He would wake up in a state of ritual impurity due to nocturnal emission during Ramadan, then he would fast."
Abu Dawud says: The number of narrators who say "(he would wake up) in a state of ritual impurity" is few. The original narration states: “The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would wake up in a state of ritual impurity while fasting, then he would fast.” [288]
EXPLANATION:
A person who wakes up in a state of ritual impurity before dawn during Ramadan and sleeps without bathing may observe the fast for that day if he awakens after dawn. Being in a state of ritual impurity at the time of *imsaq* (the beginning of fasting) does not invalidate the fast.
It is narrated from Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that a member of the family of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said while standing at the door: “O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), I awake in a state of ritual impurity, yet I wish to fast.” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I too sometimes wake up in a state of ritual impurity and desire to fast, so I bathe and then fast." The man said: “O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), you are not like us; Allah has forgiven your past and future sins.” Thereupon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) became angry and said: "I hope that I am among those who fear Allah most and know what they do best."
