-VOLUME 3- · 85 – THE DEPARTURE OF A MENSTRUATING WOMAN AFTER THE IFADA (TAWAF AL-IFADA)
2003 – It is narrated from ʿĀʾisha (may Allah be pleased with her): The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned Ṣafiyya, daughter of Ḥuyayy (may Allah be pleased with her). It was said, “She has begun menstruating.” The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “It may be that she will hold us back from our journey.” They said, “O Messenger of Allah, Ṣafiyya has already performed the Ifada tawaf.” He said, “Then she will not hold us back from our journey.” [52]
EXPLANATION
This hadith is evidence that a woman who becomes menstruating after performing the obligatory tawaf of visitation (tawaf al-ziyarah) is not required to perform the farewell tawaf (tawaf al-wadaʿ), and that a menstruating woman cannot perform tawaf. A woman who becomes menstruating after performing the obligatory tawaf may return to her homeland without performing the farewell tawaf.
2004 – It is narrated from Ḥāris ibn ʿAbdullāh ibn Aws (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I came to ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb and asked him what a woman should do if she becomes menstruating after performing the obligatory tawaf on the day of Eid. ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, “Let her last act in Mecca be (to circumambulate) the Kaʿba.” Ḥāris (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) also gave me this fatwa.” ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “(May your hands fall off!) You ask me about something you already asked the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him), just to oppose me.”
EXPLANATION
A woman who becomes menstruating after performing the obligatory tawaf may return to her homeland without performing the farewell tawaf or visiting the Kaʿba again. ‘Eribte’ means ‘may your limbs fall off.’ It is used in the context of supplication. Sometimes it is also used as a curse meaning ‘may what you have in your hands be lost.’ (Munziri’s Hashiya)
