WILLS SECTION · 10 – THE STRICT PROHIBITION OF CONSUMING ORPHANED PROPERTY
Abū Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated:
The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “Beware of seven destructive things.”
It was asked, “What are those seven things, O Messenger of Allah?”
The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, replied: “Associating partners with Allah, practicing magic (or having it practiced), killing a soul whom Allah has forbidden to kill – except for justly retaliatory or prescribed punishments – consuming usury, eating the wealth of orphans, fleeing from battle when facing the enemy, and falsely accusing righteous, believing women.” [581]
Ubayd ibn Umayr, who was also a companion, related from his father that he said: A man asked the Messenger of Allah, “O Messenger of Allah, what are major sins?” The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) replied, "They are nine." The narrator mentioned the meaning of the preceding hadith. There is an addition in it: "Disobeying the rights of Muslim parents and disrespecting the Sacred House (the Ka'bah), your qibla in life and death.”
COMMENTARY
Major sins are numerous. The prohibitions with which Allah has threatened punishment contain major sins. Mentioning them as nine or seven is [regarding] their most prominent among them. For indeed, there are other major sins besides these.
