Volume 3 – 96 – The Property of the Kaaba

Shaiba (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated:
'Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) sat in the place where you are sitting, and said, “I will not leave from here until I distribute the wealth of the Ka’bah.” I said to him, "You cannot do that." He asked, "Why?" I replied, "Because the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) saw this wealth in its place. Despite their greater need for it than you, they did not touch it.” 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) immediately rose and left the Ka’bah (without touching anything within it).
COMMENTARY:
Those visiting the Ka'bah would bring items and leave them in the Ka'bah to be used for charity. Although Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) wanted to distribute this wealth, upon hearing that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) had left it untouched, he left it as it was.
