SECTION ON FUNERALS · 36 – THE SHROUD OF A WOMAN

3157 – Laylā bint Qanif al-Sakafiyya said: I was among those who washed the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him)'s daughter Umm Kulthum at the time of her death. The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) gave us, as her shroud, first an izār (a lower wrap), then a shirt, then a head covering, then a lifāfa (a sheet that covers from head to toe). Then she was placed in another covering. She said: The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) was sitting by the door with the shroud pieces beside him. He was handing them to us piece by piece.
