Marriage Section · 7 – Those who are forbidden by lineage are also forbidden due to breastfeeding.
Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated:
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings upon him) said, “One becomes prohibited through kinship relations, and also through suckling.” [86]
COMMENTARY
This honorable hadith is evidence that those who are prohibited by lineage become prohibited also through suckling. For example, a man’s maternal or paternal sister is forbidden to him as is his foster-sister. Apply other matters similarly.
Umm Salamah transmitted:
[His wife], Umm Habibah said: "O Messenger of Allah, are you considering something for my sister?" The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “What do you want me to do?”
Umm Habibah said: "You marry her to yourself." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do you like that I marry her and take your sister?"
Umm Habibah said: "I am not alone with you [as you have other wives]. But it is better for me that my sister shares in a virtuous deed than someone else does." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Your sister is not permissible to me.” Umm Habibah said: "I swear! I heard that your daughter, the daughter of Abu Salamah, would marry someone with the name Durra or Zurra." [The narrator, Zubeir, hesitated.]
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Durra, daughter of Umm Salamah?” Umm Habibah said: "Yes, her." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I swear by Allah! Durra would not be permissible to me even if she were a virgin in my household, for she is the daughter of my foster brother’s son. His father and my foster brother were suckled by Sawba.” [O wives] “Do not offer to me your daughters from former marriages or your sisters, so that I may marry them." [87]
