Sa'id ibn Jubayr, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated:

I said to Abdullah ibn Abbas, "It surprises me that the companions of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, differed regarding what the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, recited in his talbiyah (declaration of pilgrimage intention) when ihram became obligatory upon him."

Abdullah ibn Abbas said, “I know about this matter better than anyone else; the truth is that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, performed Hajj only once, and the place where they differed is this. [During] the Farewell Pilgrimage, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, set out for Hajj. He prayed two rak'ahs (of ihram prayer) in his mosque at Zul-Huleyfa, and while still standing from the prayer, he made the intention for Hajj; no sooner had he finished those two rak'ahs than he began reciting the talbiyah for Hajj. Some people heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, recite it, and memorized it exactly. Then he mounted his camel, and as the camel lifted him, he recited the talbiyah again. Some people caught up with that recitation. The reason for these differing views is that the people were arriving in groups. They saw the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, reciting the talbiyah while being carried on his camel, and they said, 'The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, recited the talbiyah after he mounted his camel.' Then the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, continued on his way. When he ascended Mount Arafat, he recited the talbiyah again, and some people caught up with him there, and they said, 'The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, only recited the talbiyah when he reached Mount Arafat.' By Allah, He made the intention for Hajj at the musallā (place of standing) at Zul-Huleyfa, recited the talbiyah as his camel carried him, and recited the talbiyah again when he ascended to Arafat.”

Sa'id ibn Jubayr said: Those who narrate from Abdullah ibn Abbas perform the talbiyah after the two rak'ahs that they pray at the musallā at Zul-Huleyfa. [541]

**EXPLANATION:**

*Ihlal:* Is to be in ihram and recite the talbiyah aloud.

Salim bin Abdullah, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated from his father, who said:

This is your claim regarding the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him – referring to Bayda’. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, began to say “Labbaik” (I heed thy call) from beside the mosque, meaning he intended the Mosque of Zuhluleifa.

Ubayd ibn Jurayj related:

I said to Abdullah ibn Umar, "O Abu Abdurrahman, I have seen you perform four things, but I have not seen the companions do them."

He asked, “What are they, O Ibn Jurayj?”

Ibn Jurayj said, “Touching the two corners of the Ka’bah which face Yemen, wearing shoes made of undressed leather, being dyed with yellow henna, and I saw that when you were in Mecca, upon sighting the crescent moon of Dhul-Hijjah, you would enter into ihram and begin to say the talbiyah, but you did not enter into ihram or recite the talbiyah until a day before Arafah.”

Ibn Umar said, “I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) touch those two corners of the Ka’bah which face Yemen, wear shoes made of undressed leather, and perform ablution with water placed on tanned hide. I like to do that too. I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) dyed with henna; it pleases me to dye myself with it. And I did not see the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) enter into ihram or recite the talbiyah until his camel was mounted.” [543]

EXPLANATION

Nial-i Sibtiyye: This refers to shoes made of undressed leather. *Sibt* means to shave or shear.

Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated:

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed the Dhuhr prayer in Medina four rak'ahs, and the Asr prayer at Zülhuleyfe (on campaign) two rak'ahs. Then he stayed at Zülhuleyfe until morning, mounted his camel when it settled, and then put on ihram and pronounced the talbiyah.

Anas ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) related:

The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings upon him) performed the noon prayer, then mounted his camel. When he reached the summit of Bayda, he put on ihram and began to say the talbiyah.

Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), daughter of Sa’d ibn Abi Waqqas, related:

(Her father) Sa'd said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings upon him) would, if he were to go by the way of Furu’, mount his camel when it carried him; and if he were to go by the way of Uhud, he would ascend Bayda, having put on ihram and reciting the talbiyah.

COMMENTARY:

As previously explained, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings upon him) performed ihram at Dhul Hulaifa. He recited the talbiyah both in the place where he prayed at Dhul Hulaifa and when he mounted his camel. Also, he recited the talbiyah when he ascended Bayda. Each companion relates what they saw.
