It is narrated from one called Zül-Jawshan of the Dıbāb tribe that he said:

After the Messenger of Allah ﷺ concluded the affair of the people of Badr, I came to him and brought a foal belonging to me named Karha.

I said, “O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, I have brought you the foal of Karha for you to use.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "I have no need for it. If you wish, I will exchange it with one of the best armors we obtained at Badr."

I said, "I have not yet used this foal as a riding animal today."

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ responded, “Then I have no need for it.”

EXPLANATION

There is disagreement regarding the true name of the person called Zül-Jawshan. It is said that his real name was Evs or Shurayhbil or Osman. His kunya (nickname) is Abu Shumair.

Mukayaẓa: This means exchange or barter.

Ghirra: Here it signifies a horse. It also denotes a slave or female servant with a white complexion. When Zül-Jawshan brought this foal, he was not yet Muslim. Hence, he addressed him as “O Muhammad ﷺ.” He became Muslim after the conquest of Mecca.

Abu Ishaq says that the name of Zül-Jawshan is Shurayhbil (may Allah be pleased with him). Zül-Jawshan was a neighbor to his son, Abu Ishaq. Zül-Jawshan has narrated a hadith from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. (Tahdhib, vol. 3, p. 222)
