SECTION 25 – Entering Ihram for Hajj and then Converting it to Umrah

It is related from Süleym ibn-i Esved, may Allah be pleased with him:
He would say regarding those who transform their Hajj into an Umrah, “This is only for those who were with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings upon him) [during the Farewell Hajj].” [566]
EXPLANATION
To invalidate one’s Hajj and turn it into an Umrah is done as follows: One intends to perform Hajj, dons the ihram, recites the talbiyah, then desires to perform an Umrah. Upon completing the Umrah and being shaven, he removes his ihram. On the eighth day of Dhul-Hijjah, he dons the ihram with the intention of performing Hajj and proceeds to Mina, thereby having performed a Tamattu’ Hajj.

Haris ibn al-Haris, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated from his father:
I said to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, "O Messenger of Allah, is the Hajj of Umrah exclusively for us, or is it also for those who come after us?" The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, replied, “No, it is only for you.”
