SHOPPING SECTION · 14 – Buying silver when you should be buying gold
According to the narration of Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), he said:
I used to trade in camels at the place called Baqi’, selling them for gold dinars and taking silver dirhams in return, then selling the silver dirhams and taking gold dinars in return, exchanging silver for gold and gold for silver. I would give silver for gold and gold for silver. Then I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was with his wife Hafsa. I said, “O Messenger of Allah, may I ask you a question? I trade in camels at Baqi’, selling them for gold dinars and taking silver dirhams in return, then selling the silver dirhams and taking gold dinars in return, exchanging silver for gold and gold for silver. I give silver for gold and gold for silver.” The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “There is no harm in you taking silver in place of gold before delivery has been made and before you have left that assembly, according to the prevailing rate of that day.”
Simak (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated on the same chain of narration and meaning as the preceding report. The previous report is more complete, for it contains the phrase "according to the rays of that day," which is absent in this one.
