JIHAD SECTION · 160 – Giving Nefel (Bonus/Reward) from Gold and Silver and the First Spoils of War

Abu Juwayriyah al-Jarmi, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated:
That while I was in Roman territory during the governorship of Mu'awiyah, I found a red clay pot containing gold dinars. There was among the Companions of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, a man from the Banu Sulaym named Ma’n bin Yazid. I brought the pot to him, and he distributed it amongst the Muslims. He gave to each person in the army what he gave me. Then he said: "If I had not heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say, 'Reward is only given after one-fifth has been taken,' I would have given you a reward as well." Then he offered to give me something from his own share as a reward. But I declined.

The meaning of the preceding hadith is likewise narrated through the same chain of transmitters from 'Asim ibn Kulayb.
