SHOPPING SECTION · 7 – WEIGHING THINGS, MAKE THE ITEM SIDE HEAVIER
Süveyd ibn Kays, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated:
I and Mahrefe al-’Abd from Beldes had brought cloth to Mecca. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, came to us and negotiated with us over seravils (undergarments). We sold the seravils to him. There was a man there who was weighing for wages. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said to him: “Let the scale and the money side be somewhat heavy.” [178]

Abu Safwan bin Umayr, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated:
I came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, before his emigration from Mecca, and he related the hadith mentioned previously. Shu'ba did not include in his narration the phrase "(a man) who used to weigh for wages." [179]
Abu Dawud said: Kays narrated this hadith as Safwan narrated it. The words are Safwan’s words.
It is narrated from the son of Abu Rizma:
My father said that I heard him say: A man said to Shu'ba, "Sufyan opposed you." Shu'ba said to him, “You have split my brain.” It reached me that Yahya bin Ma’in said, “Whenever a narration contradicts Sufyan, the accepted word is Sufyan’s word.”
According to a narration from Shu’ba, he said:
“Sufyan possesses more memorization than I.”
EXPLANATION
The Sufyan mentioned in these hadiths is Sufyan al-Thawri. He was a jurist and the founder of a legal school. However, he left no followers.
