THE DEAD CHAPTER 61 – PRAYING OVER A GRAVE

Abū Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated:
A black woman or man used to sweep the mosque. One day the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, did not see him and asked where he was. It was said, "He has died." The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Why didn’t you inform me of his death?” He then commanded, “Show me his grave.” They showed the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, his grave. He performed the funeral prayer over it. [113]
**EXPLANATION:**
According to the Hanafī and Māliki schools of jurisprudence, performing the funeral prayer over the grave of a decomposed body is not permissible. According to the Shāfi’ī and Hanbalī schools of jurisprudence, the funeral prayer is performed over the grave. If a person who was buried without the funeral prayer has not yet decayed, then the funeral prayer is performed over him to fulfill this obligation. (Bezl-ul-Mechūd, vol. 14, p. 175)
