CORPSES CHAPTER 60 – PRAYING FOR THE DEAD
Abu Hurayra, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "When you offer prayer over a deceased person, supplicate sincerely for him."
Ali bin Shamah has narrated: I witnessed Mervan saying to Abu Hurayra, “I heard how the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, used to pray over a body.” Abu Hurayra said to me, "Do you want me to teach you this, despite the harsh words that have passed between us?" Mervan said, "Yes."
Ali bin Shamah says: Previously, there had been an argument between Mervan and Abu Hurayra. Abu Hurayra said, “O Allah! You are the Lord of this deceased; You created him, You guided him to Islam, You have taken his soul, You know his secret and his outward affairs. We come to you as intercessors, so forgive him.”
Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated:
The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, offered the prayer for a funeral and said: “O Allah, forgive our living and our dead, those who are present and those who are absent, our young and our old, our men and our women. O Allah, whoever You have kept alive among us, keep him alive upon faith, and whoever You have caused to die, cause him to die upon Islam. O Allah, do not deprive us of Your reward, and after that, do not lead us astray.”
Vasile ibn ‘Iska, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated:
The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, led the prayer for a deceased Muslim. I heard him say: “O Allah, [this is] so-and-so, son of so-and-so, is under Your protection; protect him from the tribulation of the grave.”
‘Abdurrahman transmitted that he heard [the Prophet say]: "The Fire is under Your protection and has grasped the rope of safety. Protect him from the tribulation of the grave and the punishment of the Fire. You are Worthy of praise and gratitude. O Allah, forgive him, have mercy on him; indeed, You are the Forgiving, the Merciful.”
‘Abdurrahman narrated this from Mervan ibn Jannah.
