1926 – It is narrated from ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with him):

The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) combined and performed the Maghrib and ‘Isha prayers together at Muzdalifah.

1927 – The previous hadith was narrated with the same meaning and the same chain from al-Zuhrī.

In this narration, he led the Maghrib and ‘Isha prayers, each with a separate iqāmah (call to commence prayer).

In the narration of Ahmad ibn Hanbal from Wakīʿ:

He said: He led both prayers with a single iqāmah.

1928 – The meaning of the previous hadith was also narrated from Ḥammād. The narrator said: “An iqāmah was made for each prayer, no adhān (call to prayer) was recited beforehand, and he did not perform the sunnah prayer after either of them.” Mukhalled said:

He did not recite the adhān for either of them.

1929 – It is narrated from ʿAbdullāh ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said:

I performed the Maghrib prayer as three rakʿahs and the ‘Isha prayer (as a traveler) as two rakʿahs with Ibn ʿUmar. Mālik, the son of Ḥārith, asked Ibn ʿUmar: How should these prayers be performed? Ibn ʿUmar replied:

I performed these two prayers with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) at this place (Muzdalifah) with a single iqāmah.

EXPLANATION

There was a difference of opinion among the jurists (fuqahāʾ) regarding whether the adhān should be recited and the iqāmah given when performing the Maghrib and ‘Isha prayers together at Muzdalifah at the time of the first ‘Isha. The reason for the disagreement among the jurists, as seen in the text, is the variety of narrations and the fact that each jurist considered the narration he deemed stronger as authoritative. Imām Abū Ḥanīfa and his students said: The adhān is recited before Maghrib, the iqāmah is given, Maghrib is performed, and for ‘Isha, the adhān is not recited, only the iqāmah is given.

Al-Shāfiʿī: The adhān is not recited for either, a separate iqāmah is given for each. The adhān is sunnah for the prayers, but since Maghrib is performed outside its time, the adhān is not recited. Mālik: The adhān and iqāmah are recited for both Maghrib and ‘Isha. (Maʿālim al-Sunan, vol. 2, p. 401)

Some Ḥanafī jurists said that at Muzdalifah, combining the prayers by delaying (jamʿ al-taʾkhīr) is done with one adhān and one iqāmah.

1930 – It is narrated from Saʿīd ibn Jubayr and ʿAbdullāh ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with them) that they said:

At Muzdalifah, we performed the Maghrib and ‘Isha prayers together with Ibn ʿUmar with a single iqāmah. (The narrator mentioned the meaning of the hadith of Ibn Kathīr mentioned previously.)

1931 – It is narrated from Saʿīd ibn Jubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said:

We returned from ʿArafāt together with Ibn ʿUmar. When we arrived at Muzdalifah, he led us in prayer, performing Maghrib as three rakʿahs and ‘Isha as two rakʿahs, both with a single iqāmah. When Ibn ʿUmar finished the prayer, he said to us: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) led us in prayer at this place in this manner.

1932 – It is narrated from Salamah ibn Kuhayl (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said:

I saw Saʿīd ibn Jubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) combine the Maghrib and ‘Isha prayers, giving a single iqāmah, performing Maghrib as three rakʿahs and ‘Isha as two rakʿahs. Then Saʿīd ibn Jubayr said:

I witnessed Ibn ʿUmar do this at this place. Ibn ʿUmar also said: I witnessed the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) do this at this place.

1933 – It is narrated from Ashʿath ibn Sulaym, who narrated from his father:

I returned from ʿArafāt to Muzdalifah with Ibn ʿUmar. Until we reached Muzdalifah, he continued to recite takbīr (saying “Allāhu akbar”) and tahlīl (saying “Lā ilāha illā Allāh”) without tiring.

He recited the adhān, gave the iqāmah, or ordered someone else, and that person recited the adhān and gave the iqāmah. He led us in the Maghrib prayer as three rakʿahs, then turned slightly to us and said, “Now (‘Isha prayer),” and led us in the ‘Isha prayer as two rakʿahs. Then he asked for the evening meal. Ibn Sulaym said:

Ilāj ibn ʿAmr said: “He narrated something similar from my father’s narration from Ibn ʿUmar,” and said: Ibn ʿUmar was asked about this matter. Ibn ʿUmar said, “I performed it in this way with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).”

EXPLANATION

Yuftiru: Means to become weary or to feel tired.

1934 – It is narrated from Ibn Masʿūd (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said:

I never saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) perform any prayer outside its time, except when he combined two prayers. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) combined the Maghrib and ‘Isha prayers by delaying (jamʿ al-taʾkhīr), and the next day he performed the Fajr prayer before its time.

EXPLANATION

At Muzdalifah, on the day of Eid, he performed the Fajr prayer earlier than he usually did.

1935 – It is narrated from ʿAlī (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said:

When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) reached the morning at Muzdalifah, he stood on the hill of Quzah and said:

“This is Quzah, it is the place of standing (wuqūf). It is the place for combining the two prayers. All of it is a place of standing. I slaughtered my sacrifice here. All of Minā is a place for slaughtering. You may slaughter your sacrifices in your tents (places of residence).”

Rihāl: Means house, regardless of what it is made from. Since the pilgrims’ quarters in Minā are tents, it is translated as tent.

1936 – It is narrated from Jābir (may Allah be pleased with him):

The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said at ʿArafāt: “Here I stood. All of ʿArafāt is a place of standing. At Muzdalifah, I stood here, and all of Muzdalifah is a place of standing. At Minā, I slaughtered my sacrifice here. All of Minā is a place for slaughtering. Slaughter your sacrifices at your places of residence.”

EXPLANATION

This hadith was mentioned above under number 1907.

1937 – It is narrated from Jābir ibn ʿAbdullāh (may Allah be pleased with him):

The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “All of ʿArafāt is a place of standing. All of Minā is a place for slaughtering. All of Muzdalifah is a place of standing. The wide roads of Mecca are both roads and places for slaughtering.”

EXPLANATION

Fajj: Means a wide road.

Today, the number of pilgrims exceeds a million. Since slaughtering animals randomly in various places is harmful from a health perspective, special slaughterhouses have been built for this purpose, and sacrifices are performed there.

1938 – It is narrated from ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said:

The people of the Age of Ignorance would not descend from the mountain of Sabir at Muzdalifah until they saw the sun.

The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), opposing them, descended (to Minā) before the sun rose.
