SECTION ON NIKAH · 21 – PREVENTING MARRIAGE
2087 – It is narrated from Ma'qil ibn Yasar (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I had a sister. Suitors would come to me for her. My paternal cousin came as a suitor for her. I married my sister to him. After they married, he divorced her with a revocable divorce (ṭalāq rajʿī – a divorce in which the husband may take his wife back during the waiting period), and then left her until her waiting period ('iddah) was completed. When suitors came for my sister, my former brother-in-law came to ask for her again. I said, "By Allah, it will not happen! I will never marry her to you again." Then the following verse (āya) was revealed concerning me, in meaning: "And when you divorce women and they have fulfilled their term, do not prevent them from remarrying their [former] husbands if they agree among themselves in a fair manner." (Surah al-Baqarah, verse 232) I made expiation for my oath and married my sister to my brother-in-law again. [107]
