Chapter 7: Renting Out One's Animal While on the Hajj Journey

Abū Umāmah at-Taymī, may Allah be pleased with him, said:
I was one who rented out beasts of burden for those going on pilgrimage, and the people would say to me, “Your pilgrimage is not valid because you are trading by taking payment during the pilgrimage.”
I encountered Ibn ‘Umar. I said to him, "O Abū 'Abdur-Rahmān, I am a man who rents out beasts of burden for those going on pilgrimage, and the people say to me that my pilgrimage is not valid. What do you say?"
Ibn ‘Umar said, “Do you not put on ihram and recite the talbiyah? Do you not circumambulate the Ka‘bah and stand at Arafah, then descend and cast stones at the Jamarat in Mina?” I said, "Yes." Ibn 'Umar said, "Your pilgrimage is a valid pilgrimage.”
A man came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and asked him exactly as I asked you. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, remained silent and did not answer. Then this verse was revealed: “There is no sin on you for what you seek of ease in the pilgrimage.” The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, sent someone to recite this verse to the one who asked the question, saying, "Your pilgrimage is accepted." (Surah al-Baqarah, 198)
**EXPLANATION:**
This honorable hadith is evidence that the pilgrimage of those who organize travel for pilgrims and take payment through this means is valid, and that what they earn is permissible.

From Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him):
The people of the Nas tribe used to trade in Mina, at Arafat, at the Zuj-Majaaz fair, and during the Hajj season. They feared engaging in commerce while in ihram. Then, the Most Glorified God revealed the verse, meaning: “There is no sin on you for what you seek of benefit during the seasons of Hajj.” (Al-Baqarah 198).
‘Atā bin Abi Rabah said: ‘Ubayd bin Umayr informed me that Ibn Abbas would recite the phrase "during the seasons of Hajj" from the mushaf.
EXPLANATION
The phrase “mawsim al-hajj” (seasons of Hajj) is considered a variant reading and is included among the readings of the Qur’an. Ibn Abbas used to also recite the wording "bimevsimil haj" when reciting this verse.

Abdullah ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, related:
“People used to trade during the early times of Hajj.” The narrator, Ahmad ibn Salih, has transmitted the meaning of the preceding hadith (until its last word) as “mawsim al-hajj” (the seasons of Hajj).
