Chapter 4: Procuring Provisions for Hajj
From Ibn 'Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him:
(Some of the Muslim tribes) were going for Hajj without taking provisions.
(Narrated from Ibn 'Abbas,) he said:
The people of Yemen or some of the people of Yemen would go for Hajj without provisions and they would say, “We are those who put their trust in Allah.” The Most Glorious, the Exalted Allah, revealed the verse, meaning: "Take provisions, and the best provision is [consciousness of] Allah." (Al-Baqarah 2:197) [521]
EXPLANATION
*Zad:* Means provisions.
*Tazawwid:* Means preparing provisions. This includes everything from the money given for transport to the cost of trampled earth on the road. Setting out without funds and becoming a burden to others along the way invalidates the value and significance of that sacred path.
This noble verse is verse 197 of Surah Al-Baqarah. Its entirety is: “Hajj has appointed months. For whoever intends to perform Hajj therein, there is [the prohibition of] lewdness, family ties, argument, and dispute. You only give what is good, and Allah knows what you do. Take provisions, and the best provision is [consciousness of] Allah. Fear Me, O you who are wise.”
