Volume 3 – Throwing Stones
Süleyman ibn Amr ibn al-Ahwas, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated from his mother that she said: I saw the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, while he was on his camel, reciting takbir with every stone as he threw stones into the valley. Behind him was a man protecting him from the stones. I asked who that man was, and they said, “He is Fadil, son of Abbas.” The people crowded and jostled. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "O people, do not let some of you kill others when you pelt the Jamarat; throw with pebbles the size of chickpeas."
It is narrated from the mother of Suleyman that she said: I saw the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, mounted on his camel near the Akaba stone-heap, with stones in his fingers. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, threw the stones he had in his hand, and the people also threw (stones).
It was related through the chain of narration that passed from Yazid ibn Abu Ziyad, a report identical to this one. However, the narrator added the sentence: "(He did not stand near the Akaba stone)."
‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, related from Nafi’, that he would go to Mina on the days of Tashriq (the three days following Eid al-Adha), walking to and from the Jamarat, and report that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, did likewise.
Jabir ibn Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated:
I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings upon him) throwing stones at the Jamrah during the Day of Sacrifice, saying: “Learn the rites of Hajj from me, for I do not know whether I will perform Hajj again after this one.” [31]
Cābir ibn ‘Abdullāh (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the first day of Eid upon his camel, at the time of midday, while he was stoning the pebbles during the days other than that.
It was narrated to me that Ibn ‘Umar said:
I asked him, “When should I throw the stones?” He said, “Throw them when the Imam throws.” I asked him again. Ibn ‘Umar said, “We would wait for the time of midday decline, and we would throw the stones when the sun declined.”
Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) related:
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings upon him) performed the Dhuhr prayer on the Day of Sacrifice, then descended [to Mecca] towards the afternoon. Afterwards, he returned to Mina and stayed there during the nights of the days of Tashriq. He pelted the Jamarat after the sun had reached its zenith. He threw seven stones at each Jamrah, reciting the takbir with every stone, and stood for a long time in supplication beside the first and second Jamrahs, but he did not stand beside the third Jamrah after pelting it.
Note: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings upon him) would pelt the Aqaba Jamrah at the Kuha hour on the first day of Eid, and then pelt the remaining three Jamarat when the sun reached its zenith and it was time for Dhuhr prayer, spending the nights of the days of Tashriq in Mina.
‘Abd ar-Rahman bin Yazid reported that Ibn Mas'ud, when reaching the Akaba stoning pillar, turned the Ka’bah to his left and Mina to his right, and stoned the Akaba pillar seven times, saying (referring to the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ), “He who received Surah al-Baqarah likewise stoned.”
From Abu’l-Baddah ibn ‘Asim, from his father, who related:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ permitted the camel herders (outside of Mina) to stay overnight. They would pelt the Jamarat on the day of Eid, and the next day, and the day after that, they would pelt two days’ worth of stones at once, and they would pelt [stones] on the day of return to Mecca. [35]
EXPLANATION
There was disagreement regarding the application of the concession mentioned in this honorable hadith. Malikis and Shafi'is said: “The herders pelt the Jamarat on the first day of Eid. They skip the second day. On the third day, they pelt two days’ worth.”
From Abu Baddah bin Adiyy, from his father, who related:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ permitted shepherds one day to throw stones and another day not to.
It is narrated from Katada, may Allah be pleased with him, that he said:
I heard Abu Mulaika say: “I asked Ibn Abbas about the pebbles for the Jamrah, and Ibn Abbas said, ‘I do not know whether the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, threw six or seven pebbles.’”
Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) related:
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings upon him) said, “When any one of you stones the Aqaba pillar, everything except women is permissible to him.”
Abu Dawud:
This hadith is weak. The narrator, Hajjaj, did not see Zuhri nor hear hadith from him.
