It is narrated from Ibn ‘Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:

“If one says, ‘Let my vow be such that I do not specify what worship it is for,’ then its expiation is like the expiation for a false oath. If one vows to do something which is disobedience to Allah, then its expiation is like the expiation for a false oath. And if one vows to do something beyond his ability, then its expiation is also like the expiation for a false oath. But if one has vowed to do something within his ability, he should fulfill it.” [170]

**Explanation:**

If someone vows to do something forbidden, he should not fulfill that vow and must pay the expiation for a false oath. If someone vows to do something beyond his capability, such as ‘I will go out in the sun, I will carry a mountain on my back,’ then since he cannot fulfill it, he pays the expiation for a false oath as atonement for his vow.
