SECTION ON FAY’ · 9 – NARRATIONS REGARDING ALLEGIANCE (BAYʿA)
2940 – It is narrated from Ibn ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: We pledged allegiance (bayʿa) to the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) to listen and obey (his commands and prohibitions). The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) would instruct us: “Pledge allegiance to obey as much as you are able.”
EXPLANATION
In some manuscripts, instead of istedaʿte it is written istedaʿtum. The matter that the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) instructed in the bayʿa was as follows: “I will listen to your commands and prohibitions and obey you as much as I am able.”
2941 – From ʿUrwa (may Allah be pleased with him): ʿĀʾisha (may Allah be pleased with her) informed ʿUrwa about the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) taking the bayʿa from women, and said: The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) never touched the hand of any woman. Rather, he took the bayʿa from each woman verbally. When he took the bayʿa from a woman and she pledged allegiance, he would say, “Go, I have accepted your bayʿa.” [623]
2942 – It is narrated from ʿAbdullah ibn Hisham (may Allah be pleased with him) as follows: This person met the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him). His mother, Zaynab bint Humayd, took him to the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) and said, “O Messenger of God, accept my son’s bayʿa.” The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “He is a child,” and (then) stroked the head of (the child) Ibn Hisham with his hand. EXPLANATION
When the mother of ʿAbdullah ibn Hisham took him to the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) for bayʿa, he was a child. The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “He is a child; bayʿa is not required of him.” He caressed the child’s head.
