SECTION 46 – RAISING YOUR HANDS UPON SIGHTING THE KAABA
It is narrated from Muḥājir (bin ‘Ikrimah) al-Makkī, may Allah be pleased with him:
The question was posed to Jābir bin Abdullah, may Allah be pleased with him: Does one raise their hands when seeing the Ka‘bah?
Jābir said: I have not seen anyone do this except for the Jews. Indeed, I performed Hajj with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and when he saw the Ka‘bah, he did not raise his hands. [601]
COMMENTARY
Tirmidhi says: We relate this hadith from Shu’bah.
The scholars have differed regarding raising one's hands when seeing the Ka‘bah. Ahmad bin Hanbal, Sufyan al-Thawri, Ibn Mubarrak, and Ishaq bin Rahawayh say that one raises their hands upon seeing the Ka‘bah, citing as evidence seven narrations from Ibn Abbas of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, in which he raised his hands: at the beginning of prayer, upon approaching the Ka‘bah, over Safa and Marwa, during the standing at Arafat and Muzdalifah, and at the two Jamarat. Ibn Umar would also raise his hands when he saw the Ka‘bah. A similar narration has been reported from Ibn Abbas. According to these individuals, the narrator of this hadith, Muḥājir al-Makkī, is among those of unknown status.
Abu Hurayra, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated:
The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, entered Mecca and circled the Ka’bah, then he prayed two rak'ahs behind the Station of Abraham. (Abu Hurayra intends by this the day of conquest.)
Abū Hurayrah, may Allāh be pleased with him, narrated:
The Messenger of Allāh, peace and blessings be upon him, proceeded towards Makkah and entered it. He faced the Black Stone and turned towards it. Then he circled the Ka‘bah. Afterwards, he came to Mount Ṣafā, ascended it so that he could see the Ka‘bah, and raised his hands. He engaged in remembrance of Allāh, remembering Him as our Lord willed, supplicating [602].
Abū Hurayrah said: The Anṣār were below the Messenger of Allāh.
The narrator Hāshim said: The Prophet invoked supplication, praised Allāh, and recited whatever supplication he wished.
