Chapter 28 of Menasik – When to End the Talbiyah
Fadl ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated:
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings upon him) would continue to say the talbiyah until he threw stones at Akabah [stone pillar] on the Day of Sacrifice.
COMMENTARY:
These hadiths, number 1815 and 1816, are evidence that the talbiyah continues until the stone pillar of Akabah. The scholars agree on this matter, but they differ regarding whether to cease the talbiyah at the first stone or the seventh stone. This is the position of Imam al-Shafi’i, Sufyan ath-Thawri, and Imam Abu Hanifah. Ahmad ibn Hanbal and Ishaq say that the talbiyah continues until one finishes throwing the stones.
Imam Malik says: It continues until sunset on the Day of Arafah, and it is ceased upon proceeding to Muzdalifah.
Hasan says: It continues until one performs the Fajr prayer on the Day of Arafah, then it is ceased. According to Imam Malik, it is disliked (makruh) for those who are not in ihram to say the talbiyah; however, there is no objection if it is for instruction, as the talbiyah is a sign of those in ihram.
Abdullah ibn Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated from his father:
We accompanied the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and set out from Mina to Arafat in the morning on the Day of Arafah. Some of us were reciting the talbiyah, while others were saying takbir.
