FASTING CHAPTER · 45 – WHEN HE SETS OUT ON A FASTED JOURNEY, AT WHAT TIME DOES HE BREAK HIS FAST?
According to the narration of Ja'far ibn Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him), he said: I was on a ship with a companion of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), Abu Basra al-Gifari. We set out from Fustat during Ramadan. The ship departed, and breakfast was brought to him immediately. In Ja'far’s narration it is stated that Abu Basra requested that the food be brought before passing his homes, and he told me to approach the table. I said, "Do you not see the houses?" Abu Basra replied, “Are you turning away from the sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)?” In Ja'far’s narration it is stated that Abu Basra ate his food.
COMMENTARY: This hadith indicates that fasting may be broken as soon as one sets out on a journey during Ramadan, because Abu Basra ate his food immediately after the ship departed.
Fustat: A name given to Basra and old Egypt, and also used for large cities.
