FASTING CHAPTER · 3 – The Verse of Fidyah is Established Regarding the Elderly and Pregnant Women
Ibn 'Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, said:
This verse concerning the expiation was established for a pregnant and breastfeeding woman.

It is related from Ibn ‘Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, that an elderly man recited the verse, “There is [a release for those who are unable] – a feeding of the needy as expiation.” This was permitted for elderly men and women. If these elders are able to fast, then they may break their fast and feed a poor person in place of each day.
Abu Dawud said: That is, if women fear for their children, they too may break their fasts and feed a poor person for each day.
